In traditional SEO, we target a broad context, like we are usually targeting the whole world, but in local seo we target specific cities inside a country, even areas inside a big city, for local search queries.

As I discussed with you earlier, most people now a days searches online when they need a plumber, electrician, doctor, AC technician, and so on. So if you are a local business, then yes, definitely you should be everywhere where your customers are searching for your services and products.
Now let me explain to you with an example, for example, there are two real estate businesses in Lahore, one has a website wth generic page like “/real-estate-agent”, while the other business is using local search queries and created a page that fulfils local search intent like “/real-estate-agent-lahore”.
What are your thoughts on who will rank higher on Google when any customer searches “best real estate agent Lahore”? Your answer should be business with “/real-estate-agent-lahore”, because he is the most relevant result according to that search query.
So, that is the importance of local website seo, you do not need to go to the customer, or call him, he will come to you.
How Google Understands Geographic Relevance
Google has different algorithms for different purposes. It uses NLP for query processing and website content understanding, then it tries to match the search query with different webpages and shows the pages that are more relevant to that search query. But my motive here is to explain to you how Google understands local search queries and show you the best result against that query.
Google analyses your webpage and analyses whether you have optimised your website for that local intent; if yes, then your website will rank; otherwise not.
Let me explain to you more clearly, when someone searches “SEO agency in Lahore”, then Google analyses the web pages, and ranks the most relevant page on the Google search result. The website that has a dedicated page with the title “SEO Agency in Lahore”, with city-specific content, problems, and pain points, will rank higher than the website that is generic. Google also checks your company address and Google Maps details from your website.
So that was all about how Google understands geographic relevance, according to my experience and experiments.
Keyword Research for Local Website SEO:
Keywords are the search terms that people use when they search for your services or products. They are important because we optimise our local websites for the keywords people search for when looking for your business.
There are many free tools, like Google Keyword Planner, through which you can find multiple keywords, make a list, and assign a group of keywords to a specific page on your website.
There are different types of keywords in Local SEO, and you need to categorise them and assign them to specific pages.
Service + City Keyword:
These keywords contain service plus city location, for example
- SEO Agency in Okara
- Digital Marketing Agency Lahore
- Dentist Lahore
Service + Area Specific Keyword:
These keywords contain the service plus a specific area inside a city, for example
- SEO Agency DHA, Lahore
- Doctor in Gulburg, Lahore
- Digital Marketing Agency in Model Town, Lahore
Commercial Intent local keyword:
These keywords contain terms like best, top, trusted, affordable, with service, plus city or area keywords. For example
- Best digital marketing agency Lahore
- Affordable SEO services Lahore
Informational Keywords:
These keywords are related to informational intent, which means that in this type of user want to get informed. So we use these keywords to create topical authority on that topic. Examples of these keywords are:
- Teeth whitening tips
- How to buy property in Lahore
- How can I grow my business with SEO
So, what you need to do is search for your main keyword in the Google Keyword Planner, make a list of all these keywords related to your business and services, and group them according to their type. Next, you have to map them, which is our next topic.
Keyword Mapping:
So, you do not put all your keywords on one page, but you have to place them on specific and dedicated pages for maximum results in Local SEO.
Home Page:
All the main and brand keywords related to your business will be assigned to the home page of your local business website.
For example your are a marketing agency in Pakistan, so you will use this broad keyword with your brand name on the home page. Here, I want to mention that you have to use different variations of these keywords, such as online marketing agency, digital marketing company, marketing firm, best marketing agency, and affordable marketing agency.

City Pages:
These are the pages where you will use service plus city keywords. These pages are of great importance because they will bring you high conversion traffic with the least effort.
For example, you are a digital marketing agency who are providing different services in different cities, so you can target those services’ keywords for multiple cities.

Then you can create your website/local-seo-services/sialkot, and similarly so on for different cities.

We use blog posts to target informational keyword, here intent is to educate or guide users with their problem. For example, this post is a blog post because I am teaching you how to optimize your website for Local SEO.
Until now, it was all about how to do keyword research for a local business website and to which web page you have to assign them. A good, properly optimized structure is essential for a local website; it helps Google to crawl, understand your website, information organization, hierarchy, relationship between pages, like parent and child pages, services, and location.

These pages should be only about your core service, which you are providing, for example, in the case of a digital marketing agency, these could:

City pages target the service plus city keywords that cover local intent. For examples:

These pages should be clear about your service and that specific city, and the content should be localized, meaning you discuss only that city and how you can solve that area-specific problem. Also, you can show the clients’ testimonials related to that city.

Area Pages:
These are hyper-local pages, which you usually create for a big competitive city, for better relevance, and if you do that, your website will rank higher in local Google search results.
Please make sure these pages are unique, hyper-local, with unique insights.
Examples of Area pages are:

Internal Linking :
Internal Linking is all about how different pages on your website are related to reach other pages for better local websites seo, you need to link all the pages together. This not only helps in proper crawling and indexing of your website, but it also strengthens different web pages.
For example, you will link the city pages with the main home page, then all the area pages with the city pages, and the home pages, so that all the pages will be connected with each other.
URL:
URL refers to Uniform Resource Locator. Everything on the internet has an address, through which we can access it, so it is called a URL. So, your URLs should be clean, clear, and structured.
For Example:

You should optimize your web pages’ title tags properly, always make it clear and dd you maain keyword there, it helps search engines to understand your web page.
For example, if I am making a location page for my digital marketing agency for Okara City, I will be using Digital Marketing Agency Okara in my webpage title.
By the end of this section, I will show you a complete screenshot of my digital marketing agency’s Okara page.
Meta Description :
Meta description is also of great importance, becuase i also tells search engines like Google to understand your web page. Please make sure you add your keywords to your web page meta description. It also effect CTR of your web page.
Heading Structure:
Use a clear heading structure, as it helps Google to understand your webpage hierarchy and the importance of each section. Use H1 for the main keyword and topic, H2 for the subsection, and H3 for the minor section.
For example you main topic or keyword is digital marketing Pakistan, then you can use digital marketing services, industries to which we provide digital marketing services.
At the end of this section, I will share with you a screenshot of my webpage, showing how I am using Heading Structure for better SEO of a local website.
Keyword Placement:
Keywords are the backbone of seo, whether it is local or global, because you are optimizing your website for those keywords. You should use keywords in your web page title, description, heading, intro of the webpage, URLs, and image alt text.
Use keywords naturally with proper variations. Do not try to stuff keywords in a web page. It is unnatural, and Google will penalize you. Create a webpage and content for the end user.
Image Optimization:
Optimize your images properly, make sure their size is not more than 200kb to 300kb; larger image size will affect page loading speed, which is a ranking factor in local SEO. Also, before uploading your image to the website, rename it with the main keyword in your website content

Technical seo helps Google to crawl, understand, and index your website and content properly. Even the best websites struggle if they do not optimize their website for local SEO.
Below are a few technical optimization which you can apply to your local SEO website.
Mobile Optimization:
Your website should be fully optimized for mobiles, it should be easy to navigate on mobiles, completely responsive, and provide a good user experience.
Site Speed:
Optimize your website’s speed and loading time; it is a clear recommendation from Google that your website should open in 2.5 seconds; if it is taking more time, then you need to think about it.
You can optimize your website speed by optimizing images, caching, optimizing your hosting resources, and reducing or minimizing CSS and JS files.
There is so much in technical seo, in fact, it is a complete topic. If you are using WordPress, then you can use different Plugins like WPRocket for optimizing your website loading speed and other technical seo factors.

Common Local Website SEO Mistakes
Now, most people, instead of optimizing their local business website for maximum visibility, they over optimize their website and do not get any type of ranking.
Below, I am sharing some common local website seo mistakes that mostly business do unknowingly
Thin City Pages:
Most people create very thin city pages, like they create a page for the sake of getting traffic and do not add proper in-depth unique content that fulfills local customers’ doubts, so as a result, Google penalizes the thin page with only a city name change.
For example your are SEO agency in Pakistan and proviidng services in different cities of Pakistan then you need to create services plus city pages with unique content, local insights, local cusomter paint points, mentioning local landmarks like famous shopping mall in that city, but most people do not want to d hard work and look for shortcut as a result they end up creating different city pages with only thin content.
Your content should be a minimum of 800 words, according to me, for area pages, it can be less.
Duplicate Content :
This problem is also related to the above problem; you can say it is part of that. Most businesses only use the city name and let the remaining content same. It is duplicate content or low value in Google views, so what you should do is create problem-specific content related to that city and provide you as a solution of cusomters problems.
Keyword Stuffing :
Many people misuse the advice that you should use keywords in your webpage content. What they do is use keywords in web pages unnecessarily, unnaturally, which leads to a bad user experience, and Google penalizes those webpage who overdo this, because these are considered as spam activities.
So, instead, you should use your keywords naturally in the webpage, and Google will automatically rank your website. Google’s helpful content update was all about creating content to educate and solve real people’s problems, not for the sake of writing and monetization.
Weak Internal Linking:
Weak internal linking is also a common mistake that people make in local website SEO; they do not link different pages and posts, which results in no or very little crawling, indexing, and ultimately no ranking.
